No more words to study

Jeff Smith   August 19th, 2013 2:23p.m.

Hi,

First of all, thanks for this great app!

I have made custom lists which I like to review (practice only tones and writing). The lists are composed of chapters of books that I have already studied.

When I review my lists, after 10-20 characters, I get the message that there are no more words to study, and I am forced to go back to the main menu.

How can prevent this? I would like to review these lists at my own pace. Now the app tells me there are no more words to study, while I want to keep reviewing.

Thank you in advance.

KR

Hi Jeff!

This could be happening because you've completed the lists fully, and no new words to add are left (and the words you have studied aren't yet due for review). The idea is that instead of over-studying, the reviews are stretched out until when the app estimates the most appropriate time to review them is. If you would like to study more words you could add another list.

If the lists aren't yet complete, it could also be that your account subscription is expired, causing you to be unable to add any new words. If you'd like I could take a look at your account, by emailing the account name to me at jeremy@skritter.com

I have the same issue cramming for a test, or more accurately trying to cram for a test... I'm a subscribed user and the list is 6.2% complete, so I doubt that is the reason.

First there were sync issues in the app and I had to actually go online on my computer and study the list in my browser for it to show up in the app at all. Once it showed up in the app, I selected it and it keeps telling me that it's empty!

I have tried playing around with the menus in the app, thinking it might be a local caching issue. I even looked at my list of words within the app, but to no avail - once I try to study in advanced mode it keeps telling me the list is empty. The first word even shows up in the app, which is pretty ridiculous considering it claims it's empty (so it shouldn't be a caching issue either).

EDIT: Opening regular study, then advanced study, seemed to sync the phone properly. For someone who uses only advanced study, I would call this a bug. It caused me to waste some 20 minutes of digging into the issue and posting here.

While I'm at it I might also suggest adding a "Back" arrow on the "Advanced Study"-menu. Sometimes I want to go back to the main menu, but I end up having to click Study -> Back. Pretty much all other views have one (although they look different which is a bit inconsequent, for example the sketched blue back arrow when studying and the apple default back button when viewing progress).

EDIT #2: Also posting in an old thread seems to keep it way back in the history rather than bumping it to the top of the forum threads? Very unusual behavior, making it meaningless to post in older threads, even if they share the same subject.

EDIT #3: No, actually I just got the two first words. When I get to the third word, 家, it says "No words to study, you need to add words to study, but you can't add in review-only advanced study mode". So far, messing around with the Skritter app has taken up valuable study time, and I still suffer from this issue. Test is Tuesday, if this keeps up I won't be able to study with Skritter at all, and to top things off I spent money on an app that just screwed me over...

EDIT #4: Tried uninstalling, re-installing, to no avail.

We have actually fixed the advanced study list replenishment bug in the next iOS app build, but I'm still having troubles getting it through App Review due to a thorny parental gate issue because I accidentally tagged us as "For Kids" in an earlier release. Sorry about this! Hope to get it released as soon as we can.

You're right, a back button on the Advanced Study would be great; it's just a bit tricky to rework things to load that way. It's on the to-do list.

You can change the forum sort order by clicking the "Created" header (on the web version, which should remember it on the app). We did this because we wanted churn on topics instead of immortal topics by default after seeing what happened to other forums. Thread creators generally get email replies if they have posted a thread, too, so they see the new posts in old threads.
