Simple Gamification

I've been messing around with Duolingo for a bit recently and have been surprised at how much the gamification provides an incentive for learning and progress.

Obviously Skritter doesn't and probably shouldn't go full gamified, but maybe a simple "X Days in a row logged in!" type thing with a silly congratulations or something would be a fun addition. It could be visible in profile view and such.

I agree gamification can really help motivation.
There are a lot of tracking aps and sites that you could use in conjunction with skritter.

I have been using HabitRPG (habitrpg.com) lately to gamify my study habits and I totally recommend it generally for anyone interested in gamifying life habits they are trying to encourage (or discourage) for themselves.

You can set your own goals on HabitRPG, so I set a 'daily' of 1hr+ of skritter.
You get points and 'gold' for marking it down as completed (you can use the gold in-game for stuff), and it puts a number next to the habit in question to mark your winning streak if you do it every day, which is great cause then you don't want to break that streak.

It's really easy, and is helping me with a lot of Japanese study stuff, including reading more, so that all these words I'm learning are being used :D

Check the website out for a proper rundown and tour.

Anyone else using something different but similar?

Gamification and social features have been on our list for a long time, but they never really make it to the top compared to features that are more focused on increasing learning efficiency (as opposed to motivation). I'd still like to add some of that stuff, though.

you can have a look at JamTok by TicTokLabs (iphone), they only provide japaneese and spanish for now, it's a nice way to learn with gamification.

It might be fun to have a mode where skritter nags and insults you (via notifications) when you haven't been studying for a while.

I've been making some Japanese study mobile/online games such as Kanji Connect and the Lex Flashcard Game using various game mechanics, nested progression, points etc. Try them at www.kanjigames.com

Skritter does an amazing job teaching writing, which my apps don't do - my games are more focused on reading kanji and developing vocabulary.
