queueing like Anki?

thedrunkingpig   August 18th, 2013 9:25a.m.

have you ever thought about having lists running similar to anki?

i think it would be a great benefit to skritter if there was this function.

I like being able to choose which words, hsk, textbook, random, ...
to study/review from. I have more control over the lists then.

just a thought.
thanks!

Not exactly sure which aspect of Anki's deck system you're talking about--can you explain more?

We have definitely thought about every aspect of how to select lists for study, but there a lot of limitations on how we can efficiently fetch due words for review from the server, so much of the nice-to-have flexibility isn't possible in this kind of web app.

thedrunkingpig   August 18th, 2013 6:53p.m.

for example, in anki i have 3 lists. i can choose which of the list i want to review or learn from. i only get the vocabulary from that list. if i want to clear my reviews i have to study all 3 lists separately.

You can do this in Skritter also and have even more control over it than in Anki.
My weakest point is character definitions. So, from time to time, I grab the 3000 character list in advanced study mode (study only one list) and set it to definition only. Then I'm getting only character definitions in the sequence with the most probably forgotten first.
I am also using Anki for sentences, it's the Cloze feature which I like very much. This let's me study sentence structures like 一 ... 就. I put in the Chinese and the English sentence, hide the 2 characters and let me test on it. There are so many of these function words and sentence patterns, one can't study them like normal vocabulary and it is also so difficult to remember them. Recently I have started with the book: 330 Chinese sentence pattern, which has around 2000 sentences. Just reading through one time is by far not enough.

thats what im trying to do!!!
thanks very much!

Thanks for the help Nick.

Roland, What is the ISBN of that book: 330 Chinese sentence? I've been looking for a book like that for ages!

Roland   August 19th, 2013 2:43a.m.

It is this one: http://www.amazon.com/Common-Chinese-Patterns-330-Chen/dp/7802006473

Another one is this: http://www.skritter.cn/vocab/list?list=294266574
I've just published the list. There was a list already there, but it had only lessons 1 - 6, so I completed it.

Personally, I find the first one better, but you might have to create an own list with the relevant vocabulary, whereas for the second one the list is already there.

By the way, the nice thing in review mode is that Skritter doesn't add anything, it just gives you reviews. For example, you could also use the 3000 character list and use it as review only for characters. Then you are only reviewing what you had learned already.

Roland, is there any chance you could share your anki sentence deck? It sounds very interesting.

Roland   August 20th, 2013 11:00p.m.

Kryby, so far I have entered only 380 sentences out of 1980. My deck doesn't have pinyin, but I assume that you also don't want it.
I'm also quite busy in the moment and in September going on holiday. Most probably, I will continue in October.
However, if we can share the work, I can give you the deck and then we can always exchange any update.

I do not want to publish this list because this would violate the copyright. But if you buy the book and we just share the work, this shouldn't be a problem.

If interested, drop my a mail.
